A greenhouse can be the right choice for the gardening needs of most people and can take the idea of indoor gardening to another level of success. The controlled climate of a greenhouse can be the portal to gardening success for both the amateur and professional gardener. And many people have discovered the therapeutic benefits of growing and nurturing healthy plants.

One of the many benefits of a greenhouse is that it provides the gardener with effective and easy ways to grow healthy plants and to grow them larger and more quickly than using other agricultural methods of gardening. By contrast, more traditional methods of growing plants in the ground are not as efficient as growing them in a greenhouse. For example, greenhouses increase overall plant production. Another benefit is that the grower can work more efficiently without having to worry about constantly changing weather, and the amount of actual hard back-breaking work is reduced when growing plants indoors. Consider weeding, for example. Greenhouse gardening not only controls the climate, but it means that weeds are almost nonexistent.

Another benefit related to climate control is the ability to grow seasonal plants any time throughout the year. Toward this end, greenhouses are designed so that almost any plant can continue its life process regardless of the time of the year or the weather. Heating and humidifying systems supply the exact amount of heat needed to warm and light the plants during winter season when sunlight is limited. Sunlight is essential for photosynthesis, the process by which a plant produces energy to grow and flourish, so without sufficient light, a plant will become pale and spindly.

Just as too little light can weaken plants, so can too much light and heat. Some plants need less light than others. With this in mind, a greenhouse should be designed with considerations about proper shading and coverings so the amount of solar radiation can be controlled by the greenhouse gardener. Additionally, every greenhouse needs to have a good ventilation system to ensure good air circulation. Too much heat and humidity can destroy otherwise healthy plants, so greenhouse gardening means temperature and humidity control. Sometimes, this means the greenhouse needs to be heated; sometimes it needs cooling.

Being well aware of the importance of controlling temperature and humidity, many gardeners are building greenhouses that feature climate controlling accessories that help ensure the plants will grow in a well-balanced environment. These accessories include thermal measuring systems that help maintain the proper temperature for the types of plants being grown.

Another accessory is a rainwater system which helps to effectively distribute water throughout the greenhouse. These rainwater systems, which are ecologically friendly, collect water from the downspouts and gutters of the greenhouses and can be set up with timers and metered watering systems so that plants are regularly irrigated.

Some people also use newly designed potting benches and tools which further improves the overall efficiency of the greenhouse gardener. Potting benches feature trays and holders that serve as storage whenever a tool is not in use. These practical types of accessories give the greenhouse gardener a means to organize tools while at the same time allowing him to focus attention on the work at hand, primarily the sowing and cultivating of the soil and the nurturing of the plants themselves

As for the actual greenhouses themselves, there are many designs to serve the various needs of individual gardeners. For example, some greenhouses are freestanding whereas others are attached to the gardener’s home which provides all the basic supplies such as water, heat, electricity, shadings and coverings. Many people, however, prefer freestanding greenhouses because these provide a type of escape from the day to day chores of living that are all too often associated with one’s home.

Depending upon the gardener’s needs, he may consider a portable greenhouse. Because these are designed so that they can be easily moved, portable greenhouses are generally smaller than other traditional greenhouses. Still, these are good options for greenhouse gardening especially when the gardener knows that he may want to relocate his greenhouse in the future.

Another consideration may be the use of hydroponics, which has become increasingly popular. Simply put, a hydroponics greenhouse uses water, not soil for the delivery of nutrients to the plants. The liquid solution, which is rich in nutrients, is feed directly to the roots of the plants allowing the roots to accept and distribute these needed nutrients to the rest of the plant for rapid growth. By using hydroponics, the gardener may find that he saves even more time and money when growing his plants, and often the plants grow more quickly and larger than when using more conventional methods. The result is increased production.

Regardless of the type of greenhouse or accessories that a gardener may choose, the benefits can be tremendous. These benefits include the extension of growing time from one season to year around, improved production and efficiency, and overall healthier plants that can be grown with less work. Greenhouse gardening can meet the growing needs of most people.
